Despite the European PCB industry being very important, it has experienced a significant decline in capacity, capabilities, and global market share over the past 20 years.
"The European Union accounts for only 2.3% of global PCB production and 11.5% of electronic assembly. Revitalizing and developing these areas is crucial for establishing a strong European electronic manufacturing ecosystem to drive dual transformation and promote European innovation," wrote IPC in a recent report on EU industrial policies.
Two-thirds of the PCB imports into Europe come from China.
IPC estimates that the European Union's annual PCB production is approximately $2 billion, accounting for around 2% of global production. This is in stark contrast to the 20-30% share that the European Union had in global production in the 1990s. Currently, there are less than 180 PCB manufacturing plants in the European Union, and the region's reliance on China is increasing. According to IPC's research, China currently accounts for about 65% of the total PCB demand in the European Union.
Due to outsourcing, PCB manufacturers supplying Europe have become quite specialized. This specialization focuses on products with high added value, which are often complex, have high delivery speed requirements, or have high demands for reliability and quality.
